In April 2009, the Summer Institute was honored to receive the national Francois Manchuelle Award. given by the Association of African Studies Programs in honor of their late colleague who lost his life in the 1996 TWA air crash. The Award recongizes innovative work in expanding the domain of African studies at a K-12 level, promoting novel and effective outreach initiatives to American communities with an interest in Africa, and innovative work in high school and public education instruction about the continent. The Institute would like to thank  the AASP's Dr. Aimable Twagilimana for his continued support and recognition of this prestigious award.

In June of 2010, the Summer Institute was a recipient of  the  Innovation in Education Award, given by Buffalo Business First Magazine of Buffalo. One of ten recipients chosen from an initial pool of 149 nominations, the award recognizes "demonstrable success in engaging students' interest, boosting achievement levels, and/or inspiring community involvement."  The award was shared with the Hamburg Central School District, one of the Summer Institute's initial sponsors.
